For the past four days I have tried starving my armatus for the first time in an attempt to get him on prepared foods. On day two I fed my fish shrimp as usual and after they had their fill I tied a whole large de-shelled tail to some fishing line on my ultralight out fit. I turned out the lights (when he is most aggressive) and "jigged" the shrimp up and down. He showed some interest especially when I jerked it up with a fast and erratic motion. He grabbed it once but quickly let go. I tried this for about 15 minutes with no more luck.

Fast forward to today, day four. Same deal. This time he grabbed it almost immediately but then let go. To my surprise he came back for a second grab and fight on! I figured fishing line would tear through the shrimp quickly and easily with a good tug from the armatus. NOT the case. He eventually swallowed and had the line coming out of his mouth, all the while he is fighting, pulling, and splashing water every where! :WHOA: A good 45-60 seconds goes by and I start to panic thinking the line may be tangled in his teeth. Luckily the line pulls free and armatus has successfully eaten his first non live meal! :headbang2

Quick update: just nailed and ate another shrimp I tossed in!

Nice!!! Good to hear of another Payara off-live foods. Hopefully
I can share a story about my Red Tail off live foods. All I can say is he is off food period. I'm trying the "starvation Diet"

good job bro, I will try that..tooo.

Good job. That must have been a strange feeling fishing for payara in the comfort of your own home.:)

It was awesome! Im an avid fisherman and I could tell the power these fish have in that brief tussle. Next stop...Urima Falls Venezuela!

That is awesome, nothing like angling a fish into accepting new food.

Maybe Im lucky but Ive never had a hard time getting notoriously hard fish to eat prepared foods. Ive had three cichla (one currently..an orinosis), three rays, the armatus, and a tat. All but the dat were very easy to get on prepared foods!

It does seem people are having some better success getting armatus to eat non live then tats. Perhaps it is because they are a bold, more agressive fish to begin with....

You also go the extra step. Most people wouldn't go to the lengths you did to get him to eat. Simulating live food using fishing line is beyond what most people would try. I tried this same method with mine with no luck at all. You starved yours for four days and had sucess. I starved mine at one point for three weeks straight and he still would not eat. After finding small rips in my rays disc he went to Li.
