How did you jig the shrimp? Like I said mine would totally ignore just random side to side and up and down movements. What got him to strike was a sudden FAST jerk from the shrimp resting on the bottom to the surface. He nailed it like a bolt of lighting.

There were two rips about 1/8" long if that possibly smaller. I rigged it up the same way with very thin fishing line. The thing that pissed me off is when I would feed silversides or shrimp he would hit them with his nose or face and just not like them. This was after 4-5 days so I figured I was close. Then after another 1-2 weeks of starving with the same result I got very discouraged. This last round the plan was to actually starve him either until he ate food or died. After discovering the ray being nipped I had to make the decision.

Mine began eating krill after the 1st month. Shrimp shortly after. Still spits out smelt about 1/2 the time though....kinda hit or miss.
I contribute the other payara eating in front of him the reason it was so easy to get it off live.
I did think my Tats were easier though....

i tried this with my ex scomb and he would only take it when it moved fast.
but eventually he would pick it off the floor.

No I do not have the tat anymore. He didnt get along with the armatus surprisingly.

Yeah did for a while. The Armatus snatched one of the Tats eyes. They were great for the first 4 months....LOL It wasn't till the Armatus was about 2 inches bigger than the Tats that the problems started. The 2 Tats were teaming up on him. I guess he singled one out. He is however still OK with the Rhaphiodon and flagtail.........for now.

Been meaning to ask you how the Dat and Armatus get a long? Mine seem to play games of punk tag after lights out from one end of the tank to the other.
No I dont want to get rid of him its just that Id really like to try my hand at breeding marbled motoros.
The armatus is fine with the two bigger dats. My little 4" one is now separated as he just sustained his second injury from the armatus. The dat is always the instigator though! When he was a little 1" thing he got a really bad wound from my dat. He has never like hydrolycus sp. haha.
