I've started in on the "bottom" (on the stand and in the photo) tank. First a good vinegar scrub to remove the minerals. Then I stripped the silicone and cleaned it with 99% isopropyl alcohol. I'll clean and strip the top tank tomorrow.
A little more info on the tanks:
The bottom tank is a 48x12.5x21 All-Glass 55. It is built with 5/16" glass. The center brace is cracked (not broken all the way) but reinforced with a 4" strip of glass siliconed in. It was built in 1992, almost twenty years ago.
The top tank is an "Island" brand (I think) tank. At least that is what it says on the handle of the glass top. It measures 48x13x19, about 51 gallons. The glass is 1/4" thick. One interesting thing about this tank is that the bottom has filleted silicone joints like most tanks, but the sides are only siliconed in the interior joints (if that makes sense).
The stand actually cleaned up nicely, once I got the bird droppings off it.
A little furniture polish and it will actually look pretty good. I plan on adding a couple panels in the back for sheer strength, but it is obvious that it held these tanks for years.
