scotch brite?? i no this may be a dumb question (may) but can u use scotch brite as media the green scrubber material??? it looks like it would work good .

I would like to know if this would work too...
Hmnn?

anyone

Basically, you could use anything that will not disintegrate and is not chemically treated. You need to think of media as a neighborhood for the "good" bacteria. The more room for the colony, the bigger and more beneficial the colony will be. You could put a plastic block in as media, but the bacteria could only grow on the outside of the block, thus limiting the colony size. A pot scrubber has lots of holes, and inter-twined material, providing a lot of room for the colony to latch on to so a much better situation.

I have some of them in my sump.I just rubbed the wording off (the white lettering making up the actual "scotch-brite" logo)

the round scrubbies are better but I grab whatever I can find, bioballs, scrubbies either round pot scrubbies or flat scotch-brite and the like, and I throw a package of canister biomedia in there as well whenever I got some spare cash to get a package...eheims and fluvals mostly.

I have used these for years and I'm having to go more with them since cheap scrubbies are getting very scarce.

I test all materials extensively before they go into a tank or filter.

I agree with crashinc25, with the exemption of the above statement. The bacterial colony will only get as big as the food source will allow, if you have a smaller amount of bio-filter material and more food source the bacterial will grow on whatever it can find...substrate, plants, rocks, ornaments, inside walls of the tank and filter.

So test and retest...someone on here (who will remain nameless) put cellulose sponges in their filter without testing them first... cellulose disintegrated and left a mess of particles floating in the tank to be cleaned out, luckily no fish deaths were attributed to this event.

I use boiling water (not just hot) on a test piece to check for color fastness and any glue or other by-products.

Clean everything before you put it into the system of course.

I have been using polyester batting in my filters for water polishing for a long time now. Has anyone else ever used this? It's cheap and serves as an excellent prefilter. Just make sure you regularly clean your impellar of an fibers. I have also used the pot scrubbers for years. They work well for everyday filtration. I have also used high density foam (am right now) to clean up fine particulate and provide a tremendous amount of surface area for bb. My fiance works in a hospital so this is sterile blue foam. Nice thread.

I've used polyester batting before as well but have largely given it up for (foam matress style) open cell foam, especially in my canisters, I also use torn up homebrand/knock off brand scotch pads in both the canisters and sumps as well.
