Scotch pads??

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
they probably would scratch acrylic and im not sure how big of deal it is i have heard to be careful because alot of household cleaning pads have chemicals on them so bacteria cant grow dont know if it would harm anything or not but imo fish tank cleaning sponges are cheap enough

I've never used them, and never would. Their are too many cheap alternatives. In my opinion its not worth scratching an acrylic tank over a few bucks :)

Glass...Si
Acrylic...No

I use scraps from cutting the 6X9 pads that I use in both canister and HOB.
I took a 2" wide plastic putty knife, attached it to a broken fishing rod(tie wraps) and that is my glass scraper. About once a month, I use a file to put a good edge back on it.
What really makes it work is the small bend I put in the end of the putty knife. About a 15-25deg. bend. Hot water and a vise made the bend.
I attach the pad, folded over the end, and held by another tie wrap.
Hmmm, seem to use allot of tie wraps.

used them on glass when they are wet, and also used the green ones in diy filters, not sure about the other brands, but the green scotch brand are ok and no additives.

True 3M Scotch-Brite brand pads will scratch both glass and acrylic. They are extremely abrasive.

You need to use the nylon type scouring pads.

green NO!, red NO!, light blue maybe!? they are color graded but i would not use them any how i use the red and green ones to etch aluminum they will destroy you acrylic and over time will wreck glass too.

i agree with the red no, nut the green are fine as long as they are wet, even the sos pads won't scratch when they are wet, i restore a lot of old cars and have done a lot of old tanks and i use the metal sos pads and as long as you keep water on them they do great on glass, just gotta be careful because of the soap they have on them.
