I'm debating putting in a lawn, anyone know if I have to put down top soil if I lay sod or only if I seed?

We have hard clay up here and always just lay sod directly on it. The only time I've used top soil is for grading purposes, its cheap and much easier to work than clay?

Just got back from HD,picked some up and I'm going to try it in a little bit.

I picked some up when I heard they even grow on concrete.

This stuff is pretty good...I dug a hole in my front yard and planted a palm tree and I used this stuff to green over the backfill areas and its coming in nicely.
