Screw it, I'm getting a GT

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Can def see why you regret getting rid of your last one he woulda grown up into a stunner, good choice in getting another one, best lookin cichlid around far as I'm concerned. Good luck finding a new friend.

Excited about getting one, it'll be growing out in a 54" x 15" x 16" which is probably closer to 52 gallons; hopefully it'll settle into the tank well with plenty of hiding spots, fish I've had in the past have been somewhat skittish in the tank im guessing from the clear lid

I can definitely relate to the feeling of regret after getting rid of an awesome fish. Your old GT above was sublime. I also agree with monkeybike- I've kept Gold Saums that were feisty and personable, however I've also keep some that were shy and introverted. I know that Rapps carries really nice ones from time to time (usually around 4-6"). Best of luck!

It's honestly the worst feeling lol, my friends think I'm weird for moaning about it etc :P

I have that same feeling about my Texas. Most beautiful fish I ever owned but he harassed or killed everything and when I made him a wet pet he hid all the time. He wasn't happy unless he had something to chase. In hind sight I should have bought dithers.

I know Rapps has some Stalsbergi If those interest you. I believe there is someone over your way that imports form him but I can't remember who it might take some searching through old MFK threads or reaching out to him directly.

I never liked Stalbergi due to the white saum but they are growing on me. I really like the blues and greens better on the Stalsbergi.

This is interesting, I assumed Rapps was out of the question due to him being over in America (is that right?)

I got my GT before, from Maidenhead Aquatics; its a chain of fishstores that operate across the UK, I've been very impressed with the quality of their stock for a long time :)

Will have a look at the specimens today from my local person, then if they aren't suitable I'll go with Maidenhead.

I'm hopeful, but very doubtful that I'll get another GT with colours like my old one, he was colourful even as a juvenile, I'll get a pic shortly

Quality in (rivulatus) green terrors doesn't depend on getting wild, more the breeding strain or individual fish, more a matter of picking out a nice one. Captive bred green terrors give you a reasonable shot of keeping something else with them in a large enough tank, always kept mine with other fish, just not other similar shaped acara types. I've also had wilds, wanted to fight or chase everything, even at 2 inches, couldn't even keep a few of them together because all they did is fight, got worse as they grew. Not saying don't get wild if that's what you want, but the wilds deserve the name ime.

Mine (whether wild or captive bred) weren't skittish, other than what you might expect when you first put them in the tank-- all my lids are clear glass.

I'll upload a pic of the tank later, I don't know why the fish tend to hide in it; it's most likely due to it not being in a high traffic area, and perhaps also due to the relatively low height; 16 inches.

My cure for the first one is to spend some time next to the tank, read, watch tv or whatever, let them get used to you near the tank. Tank height can affect some fish, some don't seem to like much movement above their sight line.
