Screws for a diy stand

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have used drywall screws in every stand build I have done. Of course, there may be screws better suited to perform the job, but a standard drywall screw will hold a good amount. Tempered or not, they will work. You're real worry would be corrosion from contact with water.

If you glue everything properly, it doesn't make a difference what kind of screws you use. The screws are only necessary until the glue dries, anyway. Structurally, wood glue is much more sound than any amount or type of screws you could reasonably use.

Bob, you are 100% right. Drywall screws are a poor choice for applications that need to bear a load (such as a tank). They are not designed to be used in this manner. If you're going to build a tank or stand, use some decking screws. 2.5 or 3" - whatever your design calls for.

+1.
Couldn't agree more.

Finishing nails? Your joking, right?

deck screws on my diy stand holding my 125g on top and 100g on bottom. for me if i'm doing a new build and having to buy screws I'll get a large box of deck screws as they have more applications than drywall screws and you save money when buying in bulk. So in this instance the same screws holding my stand together are the same ones holding my full wall shelving unit up (custom made from old decking), same ones holding my dog run fence (same decking) same ones holding together the bunkbed I made and etc.

as you can tell, when I happen upon a stash of wood, I use it until it's gone lol.
