Protein skimmers are not effective for fresh water.

This is not entirely true.

To OP: their is currently an ongoing debate as to whether protein skimming works or not in freshwater. It is a very heated topic, much like the fx5 vs 2262 or the nls vs omega1. Their has been much research on this topic, I know somebody that runs a regular protein Skimmer in full fresh and he gets about a half cup of the protein stuff a week. This proves its effectiveness. But needless to say you cannot just plainly say 'it doesn't or wont work' because such proof does not exist to prove either side. Hope this helps.

fiber fill, and crushed corals would be good for FH.. as for carbon, well i have 7 FH tanks. and none of their filters have activated carbon. might as well use ceramic rings.. i'm abit jealous of your tank though. quite handy for a discus grow out tank :))

i run a protein skimmer on my freshwater tank
it works a bit
it pulls out a a cup full a week of very wet green crud as i run it next to a algee scrubber
it is very wet foam verus saltwaters yuck thick foam but it does work freshwater
side note you need to be able to adjust your skimmer to work in freshwater . it took me weeks to get it tuned to draw out foam in my freshtank

also run a huge pvc protein skimmer on my freshwater pond outside and that one works great .
