According to this;

My 30 gallon biotower is 4 cubic feet. By your calculations I would need almost 800 scrubbies. Well here is what 300 shoe horned in look like;

Where would the 0ther 500 go?
Or do we grow pot scrubbies a little bigger up here in Canada?

:naughty:
Oh I am sure the SCRUBBIES in Canada are the same Chineese import that I get, 3" diameter x 1" thick, that is not the problem...

What you have there isn't even shoehorned by any stretch of the imagination...

As a matter of fact I don't even ship my SCRUBBIES in that big of a mess.
Why would you put a fluffy pile of scrubbies in your biochamber and call that "shoehorned"?

By putting them in that fluffy pile, I guarantee you are getting water channeling through the media. There are dense areas in that pile and very sparse areas in that pile, and we know water will seek the path of least resistance. You have SCRUBBIES in there that are doing nothing.

SO,
if you place the SCRUBBIES in an orderly, consistent, pattern, there will be a consistent density to the bio-Media and the water will flow through evenly. Bio-media only works when the water comes into contact with the surfaces that the Benificial Bacteria have colonized on. By the nature of the SCRUBBIES mesh, there is already plenty of closely placed airspaces, no need to make them any bigger... Look at peoples Wet/Dry setups...don't you see a difference?
