Scrubbies vs Bio Balls

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
youre right, i ignored it because it was too technical for me. there prob is a lot of good information on there, but im speaking from my own personal experience and i like facts that are easy to follow:

- it cost me less money to fill my sump and canister with pot scrubbies than any other commercial filter media

- they work. period. end of story. ill let my fish and my test kits speak for this one. ammonia is ZERO. nitrite is ZERO. i have a 210g with lots of fish. no issues. no dead fish.

im a simple guy and i dont like to overcomplicate hobbies with scientific experiements and lab tests. theyre cheap and they work, so why not?

The pdf that Fishdance showed has alot of good information, though I couldnt read the charts. How much is 1.5gpm in gph? 90 right? So Bioballs are better, but scrubbies are cheaper.

We are getting them fairly cheap. Let me know if you are interested. I will be ordering within the next week or so.

As I understand it (correct me if I'm wrong) flocked fabric is like felt, which is discussed in the sticky. Basically the experiment is proving that greater surface area + lower flow rate (presumably to keep the water in the biomedia longer) = better conversion. This makes sense. Same principle as bog filters with ponds...we want the water to stay in the "bog" as long as possible so the plants can do their thing.

so sintered glass or scrubbies?

I would get scrubbies, they work incredibly well in my Fluval FX5.
