Just get some crushed volcanic/lava rock for your sump, is comparable to ceramic rings and only $5 for 30kg.

very wrong .... lava rock is pointless... actually it does the opposite it will eventually decompose and get sent into your tank. It also does nothing for BB.

Plastic straws would be better.

How does inorganic rock decompose?

Lava rock erodes very easily. You can break it apart by squeezing it lightly.
