Open water and Nitrox certified. Not the cheapest hobby for sure but there are deals to be found on gear.

I live in Florida so most of our diving is a drive away. I own all my gear except tanks.

It's definitely addictive but there are do many different kinds of dives to do. Reef, wreck, wall, night, lakes, springs, caves, etc.

It cost me about 1000 for the training and basic gear. Don't bother buying equipment except what is required. I don't know to much about it but you can do some of the training online now. Southern California has some pretty good spots. I went diving though the kelp forest which was pretty cool. Just drive down to Mexico for a few days and make a vacation out of it. I did mine on vacation in Florida.

If you just want to try it a few time you can take the PADI discover course which is only a few hours.

You can't put a price on it really. If you don't have the cash, just get certified and rent gear. If you like it pick up a piece at a time. Mask and fins are good to get first.

I have so many friends who want to and 'plan' on doing it but if they knew how fun it was they wouldn't be putting it off.

Yeah id buy the minimum and borrow or rent the rest. Lots of places include the rental equipment in the class so you just need the mask fins and snorkel

I am, since 81.

A piece of advice? Do not go cheap on life support gear. Do not rent your life support gear.

I have seen a lot of manure hitting the fan, because of that.
