SDS 3rd Victim...

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Howling >> I am in Malaysia... so unless you are here, i doubt i can sell you any.

All 3 died at different sizes. 1st a 7 inch NTT. Next a 3 inch Indo and then a 4 inch Indo from the same batch.

I do 10% water changes twice to three times a week.

No apparent heavy breathing or gill problems or scratching, nothing whatsoever.. thats why i called it SDS.

Nope... dead less then 12 hours i check all my fish regularly.

Thanks for trying to help.

Malaysia boleh! :D gua dari PJ. nak cari satu setengah inchi sebab gua pun nya saiz itu.

But what have you been feeding them, most importantly? You haven't answer this question. Any color change, say from normal coloring to jet black prior to their death?

If there is no visible abnormal behavior or symptom, then food or environmental factor is the only possible reason. BTW, were the dead the meek ones? Perhaps they were bulled to death.

To me, there's no such thing as a certain syndrome that kill just dats without any reasonable explanation. There's always a viral or bacterial factor, like the case of the Discus syndrome many years ago where at that time there were no possible explanation.

So if you can't see any visible symptom or abnormal behavior, then be all the more careful to this silent killer.

So what does SDS stands for?

Howling >> Cool... Nice to meet another Malaysian on the forums.. How many Dats do you have now? Indos? NTTs? I think there are quite a number of 1~2 inchers around in the market. Mine are about 3 inches, so i doubt you are interested.

I feed my Dats a combination of Freeze dried Shrimp, Pallets, and quarantined feeders. I am sure there is a reasonable explanation to the death of the Dat... its just not an obvious one.

SDS - "Sudden Death Syndrome" aka "I don't know why it died." Lol.

Alamak! Tulis lah bm gua dari tempat sama :D!

Bought my 4 1 1/2 " Indon a couple of weeks ago. Dirt cheap. The last of 'em. 2 turn out very nice. Ask my LFS to reorder but was told by their supplier no stock, probably on their next shipment.

Just got another 5 today from another LFS. I thought that they are about 1 3/4" but the guy measured it at 2 1/2". Double what I paid earlier, but at least I got to choose the best (solid well defined clear stripes with deep rounded body shape). While negotiating the price, there was a dealer snapping up 20 of the 50 odd lot. When I got back home and took a proper look at the ones I got weeks ago, it's almost the same size or slightly smaller. So it has grown to about 2" or more.

If my regular LFS got his tigers in again, may plan on getting another 6 or more. Grow them out, keep the best looking 7-8 and sell the rest.

BTW, the place where I got from today, they have about 10-12 ATs at 5-6" or bigger for about US10 about 2 weeks back. I thought they were Indons and was ready to net some when I noticed the double dots at the caudal peduncle. It was dirt dirt cheap. I fought the irresistible temptation reasoning that it's too much work and expense setting up a brackish tank (I make daily 90% water change while growing them out) and finally left empty handed :grinno:. No regrets. Sold out when I was there today. No surprise.

Oh, so sorry for your loss, especially the 7" NTT and your Indons. Must have put in quite an effort to raise to that size or did you buy it big?

SDS-- Sudden Death Syndrome. (Ha! I thought it was Special Dats Disease or Death). I recall now that the Discus Syndrome was also called that, and so do any species which died mysteriously. That's a misnomer. There's no such thing. Other than fish died of old age (not that often), they most commonly died of contamination, physical injuries, stress, weakened state, neglect, hunger... all which may lead to secondary infections, ie disease, or other environmental factors.

See any interesting fish or oddballs in your lfs, pm me (if there's such a service in this forum? Haven't fully explore here yet).

Connection speed very slow now. Will tune it later. Gotta check on my new Tigers now :grinno:. I almost forgot to neutralize the water with anti-chlorine while setting up the quarantine tank for them. Only when I let them swim out of their bag did I suddenly remember. Good thing, if not, I will be left with dead Tigers few hours later :WHOA:.

for you to lose them i would say its not SDS as the tigers were all different types and sizes i would be looking more at water parameters or something in your water

NTT and AT so suffer from SDS but not the others you mentioned

Can you describe the freeze dried shrimp? Is is for fish or humans? Is it shelled or not? how big are they and do they have the heads attached? Do you cut the heads off before you feed?

Thanks for the advice Tikarman.. i will check again.

it maybe something that shows up on normal water tests

it maybe something added to the water by the water company

chasis-chasis : Specialize fish food - freeze dried shrimp with the sharp parts of the head removed. Pretty pricey stuff.

Tikarman : I only have the the basic test kit of Ph and Nitrates.. sigh.
