arn't black sea bass illegal to keep? I've caught a 80 pounder off catalina islands in california and had natives tell me to throw it back. they were in a boat pretty far away and raced over when they saw what i pulled up. they said it was a 5k fine and something else.....

Therein lies the folly of common names. Stereolepis gigas, referred to as "giant sea bass" or "giant black sea bass", is a Pacific species that is fully protected in California. The "black sea bass" that was shown is likely Centropristis striata, an Atlantic species that is not protected.

My guess is that the "sea bass" listed on the wholesaler's list in question is Lates calcarifer, aka barramundi. I've been seeing them come in recently at very low prices.

If its the one in the pic I'll take one with lemmon and butter:D

they do sell hybrid striped bass tho... i think thats what they are

Depends on where you are and which of the several species the common name refers too, there are several "black sea bass" in at least 3 different families.
