Sea snake?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
oh yes, he did run into one species on his final episode, oceans deadliest. Bad memories :( Can't remember the species though.

The problem with the File Snakes and Sea Snakes is that they are okay in captivity, but they usually die before they are breeding age. At least that what I understand from the Australian sources and forums.

Not sure how well sea snakes have faired in private collections, but they have done alright at various zoos. File snakes, I'm not sure if young specimens are less adaptable, but people with them over here generally aquire larger specimens, sub-adults or adults.

Well, apperently people got them to breed in captivity in private collections. So it must be a mysterious cause similar to the mystery of why some Diamond Pythons die early on between hatchling and 7 years, and others live on past the age of 7.

They are esacpe artists. Most places that keep them (aquariums/zoos) have very heavy lock down areas and escape protocol in place.
They are fairly laid back. But, if you do get tagged, hope you have your life insurance in line. They carry that highly toxic venoum due to several factors working against them in the wild.... like a small mouth. They are very accurate when they strike, and I've yet to hear of a dry bite.

lol there have been zoos where they have escaped over here. I imagine another reason for the venom is they need an instant death, not for their prey to swim away and die elsewhere.

A few years ago, I heard a STORY of a woman had a "eel" come in with a shipment of live rock for her 150 gallon tank. She thought "What the heck? I'll keep it". All of her fish kept disappearing in a mysterious fashion until she realized that the "eel" was the culprit. By this time she was so attached to her "eel" that she decided to give up on other fish and just keep the "eel" alone. Apparently she hand fed it for many years, before it succumbed to Poseidon's call and past away. During the "eel's" life time, a friend of the woman's with some greater knowledge than herself, informed her that it was no "eel" but a deadly sea snake. The woman cared not and continued to love and HAND FEED the snake......

Now, I have ABSOLUTELY NO IDEA if there is ANY truth to this story.......heard it from a friend who heard it from a friend who heard it from a guy blah blah etc etc.....
Kinda cool story though...

Hmm......What would be the best system to keep one in?
IF they'rre even legal do you hav a price ESTIMATE?
Ridiculously expensive i assume?:(

Man what is the point to have something that can wreak bigger havoc and damage than a pride of lions in the house???
I mean, I understand love of animals, and passion, and our friggin crazy hobby...but we're talking about one of the deadliest critters in the world....
whereabouts is the limit?

C'mon. They're deadly, but won't go out of their way to bite. Ive heard they're actually pretty good natured ( I'd still take the precautions of any other hot species)
