Hi Guys,

Was introduced to this product in a store today. Being a big fan of Seachem, but generally wary of chemicals I consider unnecessary, I held off purchasing it to do a little research.

http://www.seachem.com/Products/product_pages/AmericanCichlidSalt.html

From what I can gather it seems like a decent product, and dosing is quite conservative. Has anyone had much experience with this product, whether it's positive or negative, or can scientifically debunk or prove the effectiveness or ineffectiveness of the mineral additives?

Considering giving them a crack just to see the results.

never used it. Read the link would be kinda had to dose if the tank is sa/ca combination i would think.

hmm seems interesting, iv never seen it in any of my lfs, but dosing does make it seem like its really potent as im putting 1-2tsp per gallon of regular salt in my tank as it is would be cool to just add 1/4-1/2 tsp per 30g :WHOA: but then again how much is it? would be interesting though to hear someone's experience with this and if they noticed any changes, iv never had a bad thing to say about seachem's products so far...

:iagree: I wonder if this is to be used as a treatment like your average "aquarium salt" or is this to be used more like an RODI water buffer for re mineralization reasons?

hey i LOVE your avatar:D but yeah it seems more like the latter, as it says to dose when setting up the tank then continue dosing only at wc for amount that is removed so seems like its more for mineral supplements than treating illness but i use salt in my tank as a preventative for illness so i wonder if it has the same preventive qualities?

The salt you treat illness with and the salts in the product are not the same (actually, the product has more than just sodium chloride).
yeah thats why i was wondering if you could use it not only as a mineral supplement but also as a treatment for illness since its more than just sodium chloride and so maybe not as potent as killing off things like ich??

I dont think useing it to treat illness/injury would be very wise, if you dosed your tank up your TDS would also rise along with the salinity drasticaly offsetting the osmotic pressure of the fish vs water on a cellular level. I just learned a lot about this while studying for my physiology class this week which btw is seriously busting my chops :nilly:. Who knew it would help understand fish keeping in such great detail, RO filters are amzaing btw.
