SeaChem Matrix or Eheim Substrat Pro

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I think this thread was between SeaChem Matrix or Substrat Pro, not kitchen cleaning utilities. Substrat owns all, but it kinda pricey. I love Matrix. For a moderately stocked tank both will do the job just fine; go with the cheaper of the 2.

Seachem's Matrix is very poor when compared to biomax or ehfisubstrat sorry I did not have the info for ehfisubstrat pro.

Hagan Biomax each ceramic ring contains at least 100 square feet of surface area x approx 66 rings per liter = 6600 sq. ft. of surface area per liter.

Eheim EHFISUBSTRAT with over 450 m2 per liter = 4842 sq. ft. of surface area per liter.

Seachem Matrix™ provides over 160,000 cm2 per liter = 170 sq. ft. of surface area per liter.

you use it? I did for a year and its junk cloudy water the entire time...switched over to 12 scrubbers per basket in my fx5 and water has been crystal clear ever since...so in my opinion ehfisubstrat is junk
I've used just about every media ever openly available on the market. Clear water has nothing to do with biological filtration. Scrubbers are better at mech filtration, which is what clears your water of suspended particles. Crystal clear water does not mean that your water is any where near perfect. Actual bio-medias have to have surface area in which the bacteria can colonize, the more surface area, the larger the bacteria colony can be. These bacteria are what actually clean the water of your toxic forms of nitrogen.

I have used both the ehiem and the bio max and I have to say I prefer bio max, because it can house a lot of BB and it also stops the gunk from going back into the tank, sure the ehiem is good with the BB but that is all it is good at...

I like multi purpose media, instead of having one filter that can handle the Mechanical and one for bio I can have 2 that can do both. I dont believe in Chemical filtration.

I think you can guess that the general consensus about Matrix is it is crap, and they try and say it can do something it cant which is grow bacteria that feed off of nitrates

I never had a problem with water quality just clarity...dont claim to be a genius either...cant see how anyone would waste that kind of money when a cheap proven method works great and will outlast the brand name bio media by several years...kinda like buy the scrubbers once and you are basically done...and how often do you replace the expensive media every year or so? yeah dumping hundreds of dollars that you will never be able to get back makes a ton of sense!!!

huh? who dumps out their bio media? noobs maybe... all you have to do is rinse it and replace what is need when it has eroded away...

Eheim and hagen medias both will outlast pot scrubbers. As pointed out, it is a beginners mistake to throw out bio media. I have eheim substrat that is over 15 years old. I don't see it as being a waste in any way. I also have pot scrubbers that fell apart after only 3 years. No matter how you look at it, pot scrubbers are an inferior method of bio-filtration.

I am not trying to argue with anyone here, thats not my style..I was seriously under the impression that bio media had to be replaced every so often. so I apologize if I came off the wrong way wyldfya...you obviously have a lot more knowledge than I...I am no noob though just have a different way of doing things (cost effective). several years in and still know nothing hahaha

i like substrat pro or biohome over matrix
