The media is not magic. It is like many other sintered glass types on the market.

As noted, slow flow in required.

A word of warning: there is a fine line between a slow flowing anaerobic filter and a plain old dead filter.

With high nitrate tap, you're probably best off acquiring a RO system.

Yeah RO definately if your tap nitrate is high.
I havnt had a fresh tank for many years now, what is the max recommended nitrate level anyway???

ugh I would have to work myself to death to get a twenty. Damn tap is 20 on a good day.

21ppm is when rosey reds (which happen to be sold as feeders because they are soooooo hardy that they can be kept in substandard conditions for sale and afterwards) start to show issues... It only makes sense to work towards keeping the water below that...

Now this is a different situation when people have high trates out of the tap.

tcarswell, do you drink that water? if so, you should stop and switch to RO water or bottled water because that much nitrates it noooooottttt good for you

I can't remember exactly but I Think my tanks have got to over 30 ppm of nitrate. I don't do water changes very often at all. I have never had issues with any fish I have had due to nitrates. Not saying you won't have issues but I just havn't experienced any.

Contacted the water department today. They said it doesn't go any higher than 26. And yeah I did drink the water up until my first test.
This was 24 hour aged amquel + treated water with an airstone in it.
