seachem prime and nitrite testing

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
its low levels in the tap. I would expect established filters to be able to easily handle that. I would consider the tank over filtered and not heavily stocked, so I would be surprised if the filters were having a hard time. Plus this reading was higher then what is coming out of the tap. The prime isn't causing any problems, my original question is if it interferes with the nitrite testing kit. Otherwise there is something weird going on with this tank, which seems to be the case.

Hi! First posting here. I am a moderators on 3 frog groups. I have spoken with Seachem techs in the past and apparently when you have a spike showing in a cycled tank that you are treating with Prime, your established cycle which would normally show 0 or a low nitrite reading will show it higher because the tests read bound (I call it Prime detoxed) nitrite. This is a safe bound nitrite form waiting to be converted to nitrates. When it reads really high you should dose extra while your bacteria catches up. The fact that all seems well would seem to confirm this.

Doesn't interfere with it. You are just reading safe nitrite that has been detoxed by Prime. Your nitrite may just be a little higher right now. The bacteria are converting it but not fast enough. I agree you might want to perhaps check your nitrates. Being a frog person you guys would know better how fish tanks work but I'd suspect if your nitrates are high maybe you are overfeeding? Just a frog thought. :)
Also, tech's who I just spoke to, say Prime lasts 48 hours unless you are in a cycle or mini-cycle from a filter or large water change in which case treat every 24 hours until things are settled.

Hi Suzy welcome and thanks for the info. That was really helpful.
