Seachem Purigen

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
That's the cheapest I've found here which sucks. By the time I pay for a ridiculous shipping rate it ends up being around the same amount.

500ml for $27.74 with free shipping on amazon. That's enough for 200g.

To be honest I do not see a diffrence (filtering wise) between it and carbon myself. Don't get me wrong; I use it in my tank and it has a longer lifespan than carbon by far. I will admit that it works very well at polishing water but doesn't do any better than carbon at removing tannins from the water.

It's not supposed to. It just has none of carbons side effects. I've used it for about 10 years and it works well without absorbing trace elements, o2, or leeching things back into the aquarium. In addition to the fact that the purigen I bought 10 years ago is still in use. Probably 100 times more cost effective.

Wasn't saying it was a bad thing, especially since I was stating that I used it myself. Just was letting the OP know that filtering wise it didnt seem much different except for the fact that it polishes water better than carbon but will not clean tannins as quickly. Not sure what his/her setup is, was just giving the OP an idea on what to compare filtration to.

On a side note, even though I did state that it had a longer lifespan than carbon, I had no idea that it would last as long as 10 years! Thanks Jc1119, for the info, that lets me know that I spent my money well! :)

Personally while Purigen is good I prefer to use polybiomarine polyfilter not floss but actual polyfiter first it adsorbs evrything and changes color so you can actually see what is being removed it does not remove trace elements, reomoves orgaincs, tannins, antibiotics, metals that you do not want in any tank copper etc, one pad treats uo to 70 gallons, fresh or salt and has been in use since the mid seventies as a product. Great for salt , brackish or freshwater and the pad is easy to fold, cut, and can even just be hidden in tanks, no bleach, no trying to place in a small enough filter bag and at 5. 99 a pad on sale or less i buy twelve at a time costing way less time and aggravation. Purigen is good but since I used them all Polyfilter is my favorite.

No worries and i never meant to imply what you were saying was a bad thing.:) Yeah, i swear i regenerated one bag of it at least 20 times at this point. It still turns bright white and then brown again after exhaustion. Part of me wants to replace it, but im not sure why lol

Interesting, but it doesnt seem very cost effective. Just for my 300 alone it would cost $30 (5.99x5 since my system volume is actually 350 with the sump) per set. If I got 3 months average(direct from Polybiomarine) out of a set of pads that's $120 per year, just for that tank. 2L of purigen costs about $90 shipped, treats 2000 gallons, changes color to show exhaustion and can be regenerated for years. Other than the removal of anitbiotics, which i never use in my displays anyways, they remove most of the same things. For the 1000 gallons Im operating right now, it would cost a little over $342 per year to use Polyfilter.

My point is that whatever you find works for you use I prefer Polyfilters over messing w purigen recharging and w water changes i find poly filter last up to threee months so I change four times a year and the bigger pads will filter more water volume but if you have time to recharge than go for it . In the end it what works for you that counts. Peace
