Seachem safe dosage (tanks) and purigen

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
The water company reported chlorine level is average throughout the year with spikes that can exceed the average but within the maximum allowable by regulation. Water companies routinely increase chlorine dosage in big storm and snow melt events in anticipation of increased polluted runoff entering the surface water system. So treating the target maximum level of 4 ppm is conservative, may be too conservative if you want to save a few bucks betting that the maximum will never be reached.

Typically a low/high range of disinfectant residual is posted on online reports, such as 2.0-2.75ppm. At least in most of the US city water reports that I've read over the years. Test kits can be purchased for anyone that is interested enough to check their own tap water during the year, something that I would certainly recommend.

Where I live chloramine is used, and the amount used at the plant is fixed year round at 2ppm. That's one of the beauties of chloramine vs chlorine, there's generally no need to increase the amount of chloramine disinfectant during the year as it doesn't break down in the system as readily as chlorine does.

Anyone out there know whats in nyc water ? I dont understand any of this crap. Its says chlorine residual
I just checked the report for you and it looks like nyc has an average residual chlorine level of 0.63mg/l (ppm) with a range of 0-1.51 so I would dose for 1.5ppm to be safe

Used it today went with a lil more than half 1/4 teaspoon to treat my 150 assuming 2ppm or less chlorine in my tap.

If i were to use it to recharge my purigen would the following be correct ?

1 cap full of prime is 5ml
1 table spoon is 14.786 say 15 ml (3 caps of prime)
1 cap of prime treats 50 gal water.

If i use say 6 cups of water thats 12 tables spoons of prime (12x3 (caps of prime=36) which would treat 1800 gal of water (36 caps x 50 gal)

Safe would call for 1/4 teaspoon per 300 gal. Sooooo that would be 1800 gals ÷ 300 gals= 6 1/4 teaspoons of safe to recharge the purigen

Sound right to anyone

Someone want to read the WQR for Escambia County Florida? :WTF::uhoh:

It's gotten so bad I'm looking for a suitable RODI solution that won't break the bank too terribly.

The next report doesn't come out intil June 15th or so, of this year. I find it funny we had 'the best tasting water' in 2009.. the same year it was revealed we had the worst water quality in the country.

Recharged the purigen today using prime wasnt syre if my calculations for safe are correct but this is what i think it would be

Took 10 table spoons which is enough prime to treat 1500 gallons, 1 table spoon is 15 ml (5 mls treats 50 gallons) 10 tbls x 3 5ml doses = 30 5ml doses of prime soooo 30 5ml doses of prime x 50 gal=1500 gal of water

1/4 teaspoon of safe treats 300 gal so i should need 4 1/4 teaspoons of safe to recharge the purigen.....i think
