Seachem Stability: PUT TO THE TEST/blank slate (daily perams/pics)

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
thanks for your response...i'm going to try stability for the new 65g tank.

any feedback regarding optimal temp for a community tank...i changed from 75 to 82 which is still in the range for the fish I have in the tank though on the higher side of that range.

also, i performed a 50% water change and added a 100ml bag of purigen to the filter...all parameters are now at 0, but I still have the haze of particles in my water...it's less apparent now...the particles seem much finer and maybe fewer of them. now you have to look for it, but it's still definately there. just to make sure i'm not hallucinating i looked at my LFS's tanks and they are crystal clear and clean. just wondering how i can get rid of the haze...do you think weekly 25% water changes, less feeding and purigen will do the trick?

thanks for your help!

Just wanted to chime in and say I have had success on TWO tanks, a 20 gallon and 125 gallon, with stability.
As for your temp, I think 82 is too high for a lot of species to be maintained at on a regular basis... 78 is a good temp on average, but it absolutely depends on what fish you are keeping. Got a list?
And as far as your unclear water, I'm gonna give you some great old school advice: STOP MESSING WITH YOUR TANK. Seriously, just let it sit for a bit. I have seen perfectly clear tanks running with a heavy stock on crappy filters. After it has been running for a while, you can look in to other things to clear your water if you aren't happy with it.
Is that tank new? If so--bacterial bloom.

nice thread i have slowly come to realize seachem products are awesome from using purigen. i have a 46 gallon bow front planted tank that i filled and planted yesterday i put about 5 gallons of water from a established tank and i put a small hob filter on the established tank for a week before i started the new tank. i did a dose of the foster and smith bacteria, and only put two small guppies in the tank.

should i expect a long cycle?

thanks "aclockworkorange"...i have it set at 75F and everyone seems to be happy. it's a good temp considering the various species in the tank. when i raised it to 82 (to quickly) i lost two platty's. basically i've learned to make changes slowy and one at a time so i can always connect cause and effect.

otherwise i've left the tank alone, just doing a weekly water change and gravel vac. the result is that every week the water becomes more and more clear.

appreciate the responses and input from the members here. thanks!

Thanks for the shaking advice, the stuff became frothy and alive when I shhok the bottle whereas I poured it clear last two days without shaking.

First thanks to everyone who contributed to make this a really great thread, and exactly what I was looking for!

Recently changed from a overcrowded 10g with plastic plants (ugghhh) to a 46g Bow Front, lightly planted with some rocks (real and fake) and a fake piece of driftwood (ala Petsmart), Marineland HOT (HOB) 250 Canister with Charcoal and foam/sponge sleeve.
I setup with substrate consisting of 50% pea size gravel and 50% Carib Sea substrate (the type for live plants) a week last Sat - 10/23. Added Prime and ran the polishing wheel for 24 hours to clear all the fine 'dust' from the substrate. After 24 hours added live plants (sorry no idea what their names are but there's about 12-14 individual plants -will try to post a pic), Rocks and 'driftwood', then switched to the carbon/sponge filter and added fish - 1 x 2" Angelfish (soon gonna be 3"), 3 x Zebra Danio's, 5 Ghost Shrimp and 6 x Neon Tetra's. Then the first dose of Stability. After 3 days one of the Zebra's died then another the next day, the third seems to be doing fine.
Continued dosing and testing each day but didn't see a great deal of change in results (see below). Sat 10/30 impatience got the better of me and I added 1 x 2 1/2" Pictus, 1 x 2 1/2" Rainbow Shark and 4 x Red Minor Tetra's making in total about 20" of fish. Ammonia seems to be moving up slightly Nitrates pretty low (possibly result of slight overfeeding) and Nitrites still 0.
I've been feeding twice daily throughout, today there seem to be more particulates floating around (can you have a bloom before the Amm level reaches 1ppm?).
Anyway, below are my readings so far, hoping to see some change in the next day or so or I'll be back in Petsmart for some more Stability!

Just keep adding stability until you see 0 a 0 ni and some increased nitrates. Every tank is different and sone take longer than others.

  1. Welcome to MFK! :headbang2
  2. I am an Excel guy (write allot of VBA code) and the ^^^ above is just awesome. I wish I would have thoght of that. :D Good on ya.
You guys should really check your overall hardness and PH of your water before buying any product. Very soft or very hard water (extremes) can deliver different (prolonged) results with any product.
