cut a hole in the stand. use it as a drain for water changes.

hmmmmmm... never thought about that, very clever... decisions decisions...

actually bulkhead for water changes is a bad idea since the hole is inside the built in overflow so i can only drain a small percentage of the water.

looks like i'm going w/ the acrylic cement method.

ok, so below is a photo of the overflow and the infamous "hole". how should i go about sealing it considering the overflow area is 24" deep and will only fit one arm at a time.

i want to stay away from drilling my stand.

well glueing a piece of acrylic to the bottom of the tank is going to prevent you from having a flat bottom, or ripping out the overflow completely could damage the tank. your goona have a hell of a time trying to glue a piece of acrylic in the overflow, and then having a useless overflow taking up space in the tank. a single hole in a stand that isnt even visible would be the simplest way.

hook up a canister too it, atleast its in use then.

seeing the overflow setup on this tank, i would suggest not patching. i think it will detract from future uses for your tank. you may not need a sump filter now, but you might in the future. go with a bulkhead fitting and drill the stand, you may be glad you did one day.

if i were to cement a piece of acrylic, i was thinking of cementing the bottom of the piece first, dropping it in, let it sit and dry, then cementing the 1/4" space on the bottom of the tank. think that would work?

but then again, leaving the hole in there and just drilling the stand make sense for future use. decisions decisions. :nilly:

If you are not experienced working with acrylic, there is a high likelihood your weld will fail. Also, you save yourself and future use of the hole if you just bulkhead it and cap it. Drilling the stand won't damage the structural integrity of it.
