I'de get a general stocking list.. since you said "kids" and not just a kid.. so you'll wanna make everyone happy. find out what the kids like.. and make a list of either fish/ or what the kids each individual desires are in fish... and go from there. imo though a mixed african tank could be the perfect solution.. let each kid pick out so many fish. malawian's in particular are many colored, and many will max about 6". hardy, mixable, easy to find at most chain stores, lfs. had a family do this years ago at the lfs i worked at they had a 55.. and 3 kids.. and no one could decided on a fish they liked.. that was compatable w/ what the other kids liked... until one of them was drawn to the africans.. a kenyi as I remember.. 5 africans later... everyone had a fish even mom 'n dad picked out their "own" fish.

yeah that would me my suggestion.

There are yellow bettas that are occasionally available at PetCo. Albino aeneus cories are kinda yellow. Golden wonder killies, and Pseudomugil gertrudae would be good choices once she gains more responsibility.

yea and then when that time comes and they say no, your stuck with too small a tank and a suffering fish muhahahahahah....o wait that isn't really funny.

Tell the kids that yellow fish for the size tank are hard to come by and will limit their options... and convince them to go with other colored fish so that they can have many to choose from.... and it would be more fun :-)

Tell them to just go to Petsmart and get a Yellow Lab or 2, depending on what size tank. Good hardy fish for a beginner.

If they can handle putting some limestone in the tank a pair of Tanganyikan Lelupi would be cool
