2 days in a row, same spot, i have hooked 2 BF bass. the first was on a berkeley gulp rigged texas style, the second was a storm dive bait. The fish stay on the line until they jump, and the lure then becomes unhooked..is there any techniques that yall have that could possibly help me?

LoL how could this be if you use only hooks with barbs? Fish cant get off barbless hooks says the carp boys!

Anyhow, trick is to "bow" at the fish when he jumps. Point and lower the rod towards him when he comes out of the water.

You definately want to keep your rod tip down when fighting a big fish, this will encourage it to stay in the water, once it gets up in the air it'll try like hell to shake that lure loose, and don't be afraid to set that hook HARD so you know you get good penetration of the hook. Maybe try to go up a size or two on the hook you're using as well.

It sounds like there is too much slack in your line, or you have the drag so super tight the only place to go is up. The tendency among tournament fisherman is to "horse" in the fish, to reduce the buildup of lactic acid, making a release better for the fish.

If you are going to keep him, or even if you are going to release him, I wouldn't have the drag super tight, allow the fish to run once in a while without playing him forever. If you have lots of slack, then you have to tighten up or he will get off.

I tend to keep my rod tip up unless he runs in a way that you have to apply pressure and put the rod in a different position. I also like the suggestion made by JD7.62 about "bowing" to the fish, just remember to get that rod up immediately afterwards.

The good news is you are finding the big boys and hooking up. Good luck!

thanks for all the help guys!!! my next question is my bass fishing technique is changing from the standard shore (and sometimes boat) "daredevil" fishing to more elaborate jig or rubber worm fishing in dense vegetation. Im considering going baitcast because my normal spincast just doesn't seem to do the trick. Whats your thoughts on baitcast v. spinning, and could you recommend a good quality and fair priced baitcast setup?

i like daiwas personally shimanos are good too

its difficult i think going from spinning to bait cast took me a year of practice before i mastered baitcaster

Ive been fishing with a baitcaster since I was nine. My first rig was an Abua Garcia 5500 (I think thats the model) with a G-loomis rod. I got the setup when on my tenth birthday. You should have it masters in half an hour. All major brands have good and ****ty reels. For plastics and jigs I suggest a med. heavy to heavy 6.5-7' rod. The AG I mentioned would be nice too.

for spinning rods id use: Drop shooting, similar to using worms
worms,lizards,ect... crankbaits
Baitcasters: Cranks, spinners, worms, topwater, tubes

Both: worms, cranks

Baitcasters dont cast well into the wind. They have heavy line, 12lb+ which would be good for toobin weeds.Baitcasters can be used on anything but drop shooting b/c you get less sensetivity i think?

Spinnin rods: lighter line up to 10lb, sensitive (i think)
For more info go to bassresource.com thats where i learned alot about fishin

alrighty, i feel a baitcast seems to suite my style of fishing alot more then my ugly stick rod and Abu garcia spin cast. how would a bait cast do casting from shore? (assuming im casting into purty thick vegetation)
