i love silver dollars and my last attempt was anything but a success, so im giving it another try. i am attempting to shoal 2 and then add some once i know they will school. the two i have right now aren't shoaling tho, is this normal. will they eventually shoal. or will i need a stunning number just to shoal them? one just sits in the top corner and every once and again swims around, while the other swims around pretty often but also likes to hide. what do i need to do to shoal them up?

2 Sd's?? What size tank who are the tankmates...Sd's grow quite large and need space....Sd's shoal naturally if they have the room?

shoal1 definition
shoal (s̸hōl)
noun
  1. a large group; mass; crowd
  2. a large school of fish - more than 2

the two are not shoaling because there are not enough fish to form a shoal, try getting at least four more, chances are they will shoal

I agree... it's not something you have to try for, it's just what these fish do in large enough numbers. In small numbers, such as 2, they're just terrified and don't act normally at all. The reason they shoal is for protection; therefore, upping their numbers means that they'll act more naturally overall. However, I'd also like to know what size tank you're putting them in, because they are very skittish and need quite a bit of room.

they are right now at .75" in a 4ft 55 gallon tank, and not going to stay there forever. second i wanted to hear this because that way i can get more. thanks

2 is a pair. I have 5 red hooks and they school all the time, they can really fill out a tank. . I think you need at least 1 more but would suggest 5 to get a school going.

they have schooled with a minnow of some sort. but i am still getting more

2 is not a "shoal", and is not a school either. You need more!
