Secondary canister filter?

If you don't wan't a sump (which i'd recomend as well). Go for another cannister or a pre-filter to daisy chain your current one. It might slow the flow rate though.

Have you successfully daisy changed a canister?

It appears it could do a lot more then slow you flow. I would imagine impeller damage.

Id go with sump all day long. Since i converted from cannister to sump on some tanks im overly happy with it. Its not that advanced at all. I currently running three tanks on sumps. One with HOB overflow one with pipeoverflow and one thats drilled with a durso overflow. Still has 34 more tanks to put one sumps.

I believe filtration is misunderstood by many aquarists, other than the population of bacteria on bio media using ammonia and nitrite, and the filter grabbing particulate for the aesthetic viewing appreciation of the aquarist, commercial filters are basically smoke and mirrors.
Water changes are the most important factor in any aquariums, and its fishes health.
With your species and stocking level, you could easily be removing over 50% of the tanks water and replacing it twice per week.
Just replacing evaporation and a little more, is the process of concentrating urine and other metabolism by-products creating a thicker and thicker fish urine soup.
And normal aquarium filters, do nothing to remove that " fish piss soup".

I've tried it before, definitely decreased the overall flow, flowed more than a single filter, significantly less than 2. And started surging randomly, I don't think it would actually damage the impellers, but it was annoying. SSSHH....SSSHHH.....SSHHHH......SHHHH
