He always hides from the big male, but he came out for a spat! Bad shot, mostly for color. Hybrid Pumpkinseed X Green.

He's the one on top in the first pic. Sibling below. Different genes expressed or gender? Hmm.

Him again.

Nice pure green sunfish!.....just let you know that these are not hybrids.

Yeah, they are. The dad was a pumpkinseed. Check out the angle and color of the gill flaps, as well as the deep-bodied siblings, if you check my album there should be a shot. Also, I've had them for at least six months, and they're still about three inches long. What green sunfish grows that slowly?

See, the only problem with your assertion is that I know for an absolute fact that the father is a pumpkinseed. I've seen pictures of him. Unless female green sunfish can clone themselves or fertilize their own eggs, you are both wrong. I hate to disappoint you. I agree that these fish look like green sunfish. They look very much like plain green sunfish. I don't argue that. But their DNA has pumpkinseed in it somewhere, whether or not it is expressed in this generation. We're not talking about traits. We're talking genes.

Here are more of the siblings for kicks:

For comparison in what little pumpkinseed I do see expressed:

The green sunfish (both my own big male and pictures from the web like this one) is usually more of a square shape if you look at the body without finnage. Also, the earflap "jewels" are too cherry-red for a pure green sunny. The pics don't do them justice since it takes just the right angle to make them shine, but it's more of a ruby on the babies than on the green.

My own green:

Whereas the pumpkinseed has more of a hatchet-shaped outline:

Hmm, they are just purebred greens. I just can't see any pumpkinseed traits in these green sunfish. Green sunfish can be deep-bodied too.....where you get them from? I take it that you dont breed the parents?

At least have enough integrity to read the whole thread before posting. It's only one page.
Yes, the parents are aquarium fish. I have stated this above. And if you had read the link I posted you would have understood that these could very well be clones of the mother. But you didn't, did you? You just read what everyone else said, decided to follow the herd and stick your foot in your mouth. Good work, soldier.

Really. It's almost like you aren't actually reading. Are you just kind of blinking at the screen and letting the words that get through assemble themselves randomly? Whether or not these look like hybrids, they carry part of the pumpkinseed genome. If it is carried on the triploid chromosome, no pumpkinseed traits will show. Whether or not you like it, these babies are the offspring of a pumpkinseed male and a green female. It's okay if you don't understand these words. I know some of them are big. It doesn't change the genetic makeup of the animals.
