Seed grown greenery thread

My little mango seed died! I think I took it out of its warm and humid surroundings too quickly. Lesson learnt. I've got another one on the go, as well as some papaya seeds too. Photos to follow when they all germinate.

My second mango attempt is looking a bit better than my first one! I planted this one on the 4th April. As you can see, if they are kept very warm and moist they sprout quickly.

I took the other one out of my warm cricket enclosure and put it on a sunny windowsill but it was too cool for it, and it died.

This one has been taken out of the cricket enclosure and put on the same windowsill, but I have covered it with a cut down clear plastic drinks bottle so, in effect, it is like a miniature greenhouse! So far so good.

My papaya seeds were planted on the 3rd April, but nothing's happened yet. I also planted an avocado seed last week. Progress reports to follow.

Below, mango sapling.

Although a little bent, my avocado is doing fairly well (center). The seed overwintered in the compost bin, and sprouted last summer once the compost was spread and mixed within our tomato patch. I put in this small pot and brought it inside, and this is its second year. The idea is not to let it grow much taller but let it grow as thick and bushy as it may want. Cheers.

Latest pics of my avocado and mango plants. These two are thriving now, though my attempt at germinating those papaya seeds I had ended in abject failure. They were stubborn as hell, there must be a trick to it, lol.

Top pic avocado, bottom pic mango.

Okay, so...I'm trying to understand here...

You folks buy plants, bring them home...and they somehow get bigger as time passes?

And you get seeds, stick them into pots...and somehow actual plants appear in those pots?

Does all this happen after the brown, crispy phase? Or maybe the soft, droopy stage?

Do you have to cut off the leaves yourself? I've always just let them drop off on their own...

How long has all this been going on???? :nilly:

When I proudly show my plants off on the forum, whether they're from the garden, or from indoors, there is a degree of smugness and pride going on. But more than anything it is as much astonishment!

My horticultural feats are pure hit and miss, usually a miserable miss. You don't get to see pictures of the failures, but in any case, from your description, I think you already know what they look like! lol.

The ones which come good, well, I let everyone know about it, lol. When you get a plant to grow, and it grows well, all green and shiny, and good god, even flower!! there is little to compare with the feeling of accomplishment.

Fish have always been a part of my life from an early age, but plants and gardening have only gripped me these past few years really, and I love it.

I've pretty much got the aquarist part dialled in now, but the plants thing, it's way more difficult, but I just love the challenge.

Hey jjohnwm jjohnwm , whilst I'm strutting my stuff and puffing my chest out how about this one. I recently posted the picture below in my gardening thread, not sure if you've seen it. My Musa basjoo banana plant, which has been through hell with me since I got it, but it has now settled down and is thriving, well it is only having babies!!!

And guess what baby banana plants are called, you're gonna love this being a dog man. They're called....PUPS!! So I'd like you to meet my little, not so furry friend.....Fido!! Lol.

Look at the little guy, ain't it just as cute as can be!!
