I'm setting up a fish room with a few 125s ,75s,55s. I have a handful of sponge filters I plan on using for atleast at first. I was wondering if this would work for seeding them and trying to establish my beneficial bacteria. I was going to take a fx6, or another canister filter off of a good tank that's been running for a few years and clean it like I usually do. Excepted if rinse out the canister sponges squeezing them in one of the new tanks. I'd have the filter water left over in a 5g bucket after. I was thinking I could take a sponge filter or two and put them in the bucket and let them run untill that water cleared up. The sponge would then have all that nice B.B. Could I pop that sponge filter in a tank and be confident the tank has a good jumpstart on its cycling process? Good idea or bad idea?

No need for a bucket. Just squeeze the seeded canister sponges in the new tank with the new sponge filter. Really jump starts the cycling.

I just seeded my 220 that way. I took the sponges and what not from my FX-6 running on my 125 and rinsed them all out in a bucket of water then I dumped the bucket in my 220. Along with three filters that were running on established tanks. This is what it looked like, a nice brown mess of beneficial bacteria.

Tank looks awesome! Thanks for the conformation! Il get to work on it this weekend.

Another thing I do is put a bag of zero carb from fluval in the FX-5 which is an ammonia remover while I male sure the Tank cycled. But I still do daily water testing to male sure ammonia isn't showing up.

So last night I rinsed my media and sponges from a canister in the 125. This weekend I'm going do the same with a fluval 406 I've had running for about 6 months on my bow front. If the bulk head I ordered comes In il plumb my sump and probably just set up the 406 and start water testing next week.
