...yes it is a Spotted Pike Characin, Peruvian Gar (Boulengerella maculata).

Howdy,

Very nice fish! Congrats! How big is your Peruvian Gar, and how "social" is it? And how hungry? Do you give feeders, pellets, crickets ...? I'm curious since I am thinking about getting some myself.

Thanks for sharing,

Hi! This guy is almost a foot, he actually had a buddy, but an unfortunate fatality happened. We think the eel took a bite out of it. So we transfered the remaining gar and the aro to our 190 gal and they are doing great. They are buddies. They stay by each other all the time. We recently added two everglade gars, but they stay towards the bottom. We also recently ran across two more peruvians at a fish store, so we snatched two up so he can have some friends. They are only babies now, like 5",but they do grow quickly. We feed them rosy reds when they are babies and work our way up the bigger they get. We feed them about every week or every two, depending on how many feeders we get, definately feed the babies more often. In MN, they cost $30 per fish and come around rarley, so my opinion is if you have a chance to get some do. Our big one is kept with a silver aro, two everglades, two parrots and a pleco. All get along well. I'll try to take some pics later today of the whole tank for ya. Hope this helps:)

That's awesome info, thanks!
How big is the mouth? Do you think they could be housed with Blue Guramis, or would they end up as gar food? ;)

Thanks,

HarleyK

bad idea, anything he doesn't consider food you can keep with it. anything that's smaller and going to make any sudden moves in front of his face, you're asking for trouble...

Mines only about 5" and hes with an aro too!
