Hi and thanks for reading! Im starting to do some research to find fish for my ten gallon freshwater tank. Im not sure where to start when choosing fish as I am still uneducated in all fish species. I have been taking care of a 75g freshwater tank for about 8 months it contains one mayan cichlid and is doing very well so I got the basics down and can keep water levels safe. Im really not sure the level of difficulty I am able to handle with fish species but want to learn and eventually get maybe some more desirable fish once I learn more. Anyways hope to get some ideas on anything. I prefer different species together but also dont mind having just one species but want multiple fish in there. No plants as of yet I am willing to upgrade the lighting and add plants if it helps a certain species that anyone recommends.
Thanks for any advice!

White cloud minnows, solid solid inexpensive fish. They also look decent and are underrated in my opinion. There are also a few variants to choose from

Corydoras pygmaeus would love all that sand, and would make a fantastic community fish in that size tank. 8-12 would be fine.

Kubotai rasboras (microdevario kubotai) would do well in a set up without plants or with. They come from rivers with rocks and driftwoods in Thailand, not a ton of plants. A group of 8-10 would do great in a 10g with the cories mentioned above.

Theres others... but those are my suggestions. I keep both in my 10g!

Kubos got some neat colours. Metallic neon green, but at the right angle they got blues and reds in them too. And they dont get larger than 3/4".

And, how can anyone resist these tiny faces?

Sparkling gouramis, these little guys are awesome. Upgrade the light as it appears yours isn’t bright for some species of plants, beams work lights seem good for 10 gallon tanks. Plant it with ludwigia, rotala sp. green, and others that don’t require co2. If you densely plant the tank, after a month it would look awesome with nano fish. Sparkling gouramis enjoy swimming around plants, and get some kind of nano Rasbora and shrimp to help eat algae that will form in the early stages of a planted tank.

wow really cool thanks for the replies these fish already got my attention! its hard to choose is it possible to have them all in here like one of each or do they need some more of the same species with each other? I will do my research and post back if I make a decision or have other questions I appreciate the help!

edit: I really like the idea about upgrading my light and adding plants!

I second pygmies. You could also do ember tetras and a singular checkerboard cichlids. A south American biotope!
Oh and lucky bamboo shouldn't be all the way under water. the top NEEDS to be above the water line.

I have sparkling gouramis in with my kubos and pygmies too. Only reason i didnt suggest them is they definitely need dense plants. Ideally keep only 1 male to 2 females. In a 10, keep only 1 male as a second male is more likely to terrorize the less dominant one.

Stock in my 10g:

8 kubotai rasboras
3 sparkling gourami
10 corydoras pygmaeus

All run with a 20gal sponge filter and plants. I went blackwater though, so got leaf litter added too. Went with hornwort, anacharis, and crypts for plants as theyre easy any light plants.

Great help thanks so much! I was expecting to spend a couple days thinking about it but I feel like I already know what I want now! So far I have decided to do 3 species the pygmy corydoras the kubotai rasbora and the "long fin" white cloud minnow. Also I will look into getting a light and adding the rotala and ludwigia. this arises more questions and any further advice is much appreciated! First is there anything I should know about these species like will they be compatable with each other and should I set my tank up any special way? I will try not to overthink too much I just want to leave minimal room for error on my end. Thanks again everyone!

edit: another question how many of each species should I get?

The Tetra, Pygmaeus Dwarf Corydora and White Cloud Mountain Minnow should always be kept in groups.
