Ok, I've read through the numerous canister filter posts, and have narrowed down the field. I've never used a canister, I'm mainly a HOB or Wet/dry person, but in this situation I won't be able to use a wet/dry. My tank is going to be 72 x 18 125 G, acrylic, with 4 or 5, 6"-9" cichlids so a moderate to heavy bio load, I feed NLS twice daily and fast one day, I may occasionally use Ghost shrimp, krill or veggies. I plan on running one Aquaclear 500 and adding a canister. Here are the choices after reading a great deal of information. I'm looking at Eheims 2217, 2026 or the 2250, or a Marineland 360. Which would you prefer and why for this setup? Also a couple additional questions. If there is a power outage, will the canister filter kick back on and self prime? Will they backflow and flood the floor? How prone are these filters to leaking?

Thanks in advance.....

the eheim for sure, but them again i am probably one of the biggest eheim fans in the world, me and wyldfya anyway. LOL Get the 2026 due to the ease of priming if that is a main criteria.

All will self prime. No worries about leaking for the most part (assuming you get a reputable brand).

Eheim is the best according to most opinions, but several brands are just fine too. It really comes down to what level of dependability you are looking for. Also, there are other questions to answer: noise level, ease of use (priming, etc.), ease of maintenance, etc. For all those reasons I use Eheim exclusively now (that is, wherever I'm not using a wet/dry). Eheim is a fine example of German engineering, but you pay for it.

Much appreciated, I weighed other factors as you mentioned (noise level, etc), I definitley am going to go with an Eheim, and as of right now it looks like the 2217 is the best value for this aquarium. I'm a big fan of the mechanical aspects of aquatic keeping, however, as mentioned in some other posts I think there is so much redundant filtration. As long as your ammonia and nitrite are at zero, it isn't going to matter how many gph's your running through your filtration....

For a tank that big, with that stocking, I'd run either 2 2217, 1 2028, 1 2078, 1 2076 or any of the big eheims. Canisters don't backflow at all. When the pump stops, the water stops, when the pump starts the water starts. All you have to worry about is leaks (not common with eheims) and air in the system (primarily a problem from a leak, or having an air source under the intake.

i would go 2250 or 2260. as said above canisters are enclosed and do not backflow, when power comes back they start pumping water again no probs. IF YOU GO FOR ANY OF THE CLASSICS GET THE VALVE TAPS (if they are not already supplied as a pack). they are indespensable if you need to clean the filter, you just shut these, remove the filter and plug back on, and water will start to flow again no probs.
