selecting an air pump for a large aquarium

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i've always used Millionair pumps, and ended up replacing them every year.. and then, about 2 years ago i started seeing these big white pumps in a couple small LFS' and i bought one and tried it.

they are called Fusion Quiet Power. Since i changed the aquariums all over to these pumps i have had NO trouble. they are quieter than any other air pump i've ever used, and i have had NONE fail in nearly 2 years. i have the model 600 on all of the "small" tanks, and i have 700's (largest they make) for the larger tanks. i run 2 hydro 5 sponge filters with an air stone on each pump.

the company name is J.W. Aquatic or J.W. Pet Company, Inc. in Teterboro, NJ.

Question, if your looking at buying pumps anyway, have you considered the kind that switch to battery power in case of power outages?
I thought about that and decided it wasn't neccessary as I have a backup generator and automatic transfer switch.
I went ahead and ordered another Rena 300 to go with the other one.
Thanks for the imput everybody.

Bumping an old thread because I'm interested in this pump (the 600) to run two sponge filters in an 80gal aquarium. What size are your 'smaller' tanks and do you have any additional filtration in them or just the two sponges? What speed have you found works the best for two #5 sponges on the pump? (I plan to run two of the PRO sponges if that matters)

i'll sell you my rena 400 brand new replacement i got. let me know pm me

I have a rena 400, awesome pump. It's around 4 years old and I still have the 2 rebuild kits I bought with it sealed in package because I don't need them yet. I have a coral life super luft SL-65. Loud, hot, power hog, good pressure and air. Mine still works but makes a buzzing sound that's even louder than a new one so I consider it broken after 6 months and i only keep it around as a backup (if you bang it on the floor ALOT you can get the buzzing to stop for a few days). Maybe I got a lemon because it ran too hot for being placed in a cool location with all outputs open. I have the smallest jehmco linear piston pump and it blows every other pump out of the water except it's larger brothers. They are made in japan by the same company that uses these pumps in medical grade equipment.

www.jehmco.com they have amazing, reliable, incredibly STRONG pumps.

Bought a Rena 400 and a Whisper AP300 at the same time. Hooked both up to two 8" airstones and ran them. Whisper smoked the Rena. 7.5 watts dual outlets and TONS of pressure....

Been using the AP300 for about 5 years now. Won't buy any other pump

i know this is an old thread but i will never buy another rena air pump again, they are way overpriced for a simple air pump that doesnt work all that great.

Confusing this is. My year old whisper100 works fine but has become very noisy. i am in the market for another....thinking about the Tetra whisper Deepwater series.....Anyone try them?
