Selective Breeding.

Hello, Im doing a project for my grade 11 biology class on selective breeding and i thought, Hey, fish, well, i think that all the time, but i finally found a way to work it into something.

Does anyone have any experience or more scientific knowledge of selective breeding?

I'm talking about any species it doesn't matter.

Could you answer a few questions like,

Defining the technology, what is it? how do you use it?

describe how you do it.

Potential uses or applications for how you apply this technology.

How you learn from it, gather information about it.

How it could potentially be misused.

This isnt the sole thing I'm relying on for the project, but i thought it may be a cool way to sneak in some fish and maybe get in a few more sources, never hurts to try.

I'd need some credentials, you could possibly PM to me, like your experience or any graduate degrees or something like 15 years in the hobby, etc.

No real secret with selective breeding. Basically you pick a trait you like and you breed two fish that have that trait togeather. For example you want a fish that is red but has a yellow tail. You find a fish that has a little yellow on its tail and you breed it to the fish with the most red. Then you pick the offspring that has the most red color and with a yellow tail you cull the ones that don't have this trait. Then you breed this fish ( 2nd gen). This continues until you have a fish tha tis red with a yellow tail. This is in the simpliest example. You will need a couple pairs that will breed and produce offspring that you pick out the trait you want. It's basically controlled evolution and that is the danger. When you selectively breed you don't usually pick out the trait that makes that animal more able to live in the wild you pick the trait that "looks good" , also some traits are lost because you did not breed them in to the new generations of the fish. THe example of the fish with the yellow tail. Lets say the fish starts devoloping the yellow tail soon after it hatches instead at maturity like it does in the wild, now the fish is not big enough or fast enough to escape the other fish and the bright tail gives it away when it tries to hide. ANother example say the 1st generation had the ability to fight off disease A well during the selective breeding the future generations lost this ability to fight it off. THen the fish would be easly wiped out by disease A. Hopefully this helps you( hopefully I explained it clear enough)

Eugenics goes back to ancient times to people such as Plato; Hitler has nothing to do with anything.

Stupidity is a questionable matter – its not just not allowing stupid people, not at all. People with certain health risks and such, should not be allowed to breed would be an example. We live in a society where stuff like history of heart disease in your family is asked on every application you fill out.

As far as i'm concerned, its already in use in humans, with karyotype charts and all.

Im alright with it as long as the world doesnt turn out in something like in that book, a brave new world. And how else can things like turners syndrome and downs syndrome, klinefelter's , etc. be cured, and prevented.
