Selective Breeding

The trailers on grammodes and many other fish are achieved by keeping them alone without other fish nibbling their fins. You will never have a grammodes with trailers that last in a community tank (not saying that's your plot).

Although it can possibly be achieved through breeding, you won't know unless you keep the fish alone. As an example my friend kept my RTM female in a divided tank for over a year and when I got her back she had amazing trailers. Even though she was the dominant fish in the tank they were gone within a week. Trailers look delicious to other fish.

Cross breeding is something all together different from what i'm talking about, I'm wishing to explore so called pure species breeding.

As mentioned earlier, to acquire certain traits it can take a lot of work, patience, and time. But in general I think most of us try to continue certain desirable traits when pairing fish. We usually choose the fish with the best color, form, and health. I think it helps to add stronger stock in the hobby. Keeping and breeding certain locales is important to some people. Other people like to breed fish from varying locales to achieve various traits. I guess it can get really complicated. But I don't see anything wrong with selective breeding as long as people don't pass off the resulting fry as something they are not.
