Self Leveling Concrete ?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
One concern that comes to mind is if you use the SLC over cured concrete is the potential for cracking as the existing floor will be a cold joint to the SLC. I want to say there is a primer that will cure this aspect but I would look into rock board and thinset for a level surface to work off of.

To my knowledge SLC over slab is a typical process for installing laminate, vinyl flooring etc where a level surface is needed. But yes I do have a primer that is supposed to assist in the bonding of the two.

Im actually about to do this myself. I just bought a bag of Henry 565 self leveling floor underlayment for Lowes. 40 lb bag. I have about 1/4" low spots in some places after some close inspections. After all the reading ive done outside of here, seems like its pretty much in line with what is being said here. Some people even saying they never touch it with a trowel or any tooling except feathering edges. I'll post my before and after asap

My pour was roughly 6ftx2ft. I was about 1/4" low in the back. I used 1 40lb bag, and it was too much. I probably would have used 2/3 a bag. I definitely recommend a frame.'

edit: After looking back at your OP, id say 2 bags would be almost perfect for that size, but how low are the spots that you are worried about. thats the key. If you only need a skim coat, 1 bag might even do it. If you dont have a mixing paddle, get one for sure.

Thanks. It’s about the same about 1/4 -1/2 in the lowest spot. It’s one of those things where I definitely don’t want to have enough to start.

I do have a mixing paddle. Did you mix in a 5 gallon bucket? Have read that it maybe be best to grab a larger bucket.

D Dovii kid I poured the same dimensions as you with .5 inch depth in some spots. You will need more than you think, I would buy a few more bags then if you dont need them return them. I used a mixing paddle in a 5 gal bucket one bag at a time, used around 4-5 bags. For an area that large you may have to push it around to level it out unless you make it extra watery.
