Selling Pothos from Tank: Good Idea or Bad?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Nothing special about any pothos really. - This is coming from someone who's pretty heavy into plants.
Golden pothos, Neon and others are quite common. Worth nothing.
Even the rarer stuff like manjula and n'joy are still cheap, and those varieties I haven't had much success with in aquariums, due to light levels and high vareigation.
Just don't really bother. Growing plants for money is only profitable if you've got super rare species of plants or expensive variegations (Think $250+ for a single leaf cutting)

While making hundreds of dollars on plants would be awesome, I'm more just doing it to make a little bit of extra spending money. I'm not expecting a huge amount of profit.

To be fair, I would be selling a lot larger plants. I wouldn't sell clippings that small, even though they look great!
I don't think you understand the growth rate of pothos.

It wont do any harm to try, cut and pot some up and see how it goes, people will either buy it or they wont.
I doubt you will get rich from it but making a bit of cash to cover tank expenses such as food and dechlorinator would be realistic.

Well...when you are living under your parents' roof...not paying for heat, or power, or water...not taking time away from a full-time job...then it's 100% pure profit...for you. :)

You have nothing to lose by trying it out, so go for it! If you make a few bucks, great. If you don't...it'll be an excellent lesson in the realities of economy and free enterprise.

Just remember: if you expect people to buy from you, you will need to either offer a product that they can't get elsewhere (doesn't sound like that's the case here) or else you need to offer prices that are way lower than they would pay if buying from an established retailer (or else why would they buy from you as opposed to the store?).

Agreed. You might also want to go to the local HomeDepot or similar and buy a Pothos just to see what you get. In every instance all the growers are doing is cutting established plants just beyond (and keeping) the rhizome and stuffing them straight into the dirt. There's not much to 'em.

Yep, that's what I intend to do. I don't expect to be Elon Musk from the profit but a little extra cash can't hurt anyone ;)

Third option, tug on their heart strings with reminding them that you are a local option and the funds *might* be going for a college fund. People love to be told they’re doing a good thing and helping out while having to do very little themselves.
