If I recall correctly, in CA you're fine provided that the fish(es) that you want to trade and/or sell are not legitimately native to CA, so you'd be fine with, say, largemouth bass.

It depends on local and state regulations. Many states require you to be a licensed, in the same manner as a federal firearms dealer license or a liquor license. In MOST states, it is illegal to sell game fish or game fish parts that were harvested from the wild (and the same is often true for game animals for hunting).
some places if u can prove its a 3rd gen or later than its fine, "saying" u bought them from a pet store duznt allways work
I am sure with the game fish there is trouble. Also a fish that is native to North America, but is not native to your state is fine. I have heard of these 2 laws. but I better double check on the latter one just to make sure. Only reason I brought this up cause I do believe even if small they can bust you. Not long ago some kid on here was trying to sell some fish he caught. One of them was a baby shark and next thing you know Feds or Fish and game people showed up at his door.
