i have my bichir in a 20 gallon tank now, "he is only like 5 inches". since they are supposed to be in a 55 gallon or larger would they possibly be housed in a 30 gallon long tank if he is the only one in the tank?

Most important thing is the length. Might be ok with a 30g long.

man i hope so cause i have to factor in weight in our house an a 30 gallon is the biggest i can go with our foundation not bein supported for the extra weight. a 55 is sure to go threw the floor. lol

If your floor can support it a 40g breeder would be alot better, because it has a little more width. Btw I'm guessing it's a sen by your avatar.

thats how big my sen. is lol but its a google snatch. i havent got pics of mine up yet. i have to put cash on my phone so i can upload pics to the comp. but ya thats as close as i could find to his actual size.

I have 100g, I put it on the floor, couse I have no table to support it, so far works ok till now, you could have up to 4 bichirs in a 55g though, just make sure you hv a good filter too

It can be in a 30 with great filtration, exacting waterchange schedules, and proper feeding (not overfeeding) and don't plan on msny if any tankmates-Anne

Yeah, a 30 should be fine for one senegal.

I'm surprised to hear about a 55g causing problems on your foundation... I was worried about my floor joists and beams being able to support my 55g upstairs (I live in a VERY old house), but after a short talk with a family member who is a carpenter/contractor, I was told I really shouldn't have any problems... A few months later, the tank is running strong and the floor hasn't shifted one bit (although I did have to correct the water level slightly the day after the tank settled into place, but that's it).

Just a word of advice: If this is your first bichir, do yourself a favor and get the absolute biggest tank you can (according to weight limits and budget restrictions), because there aren't many people out there that can settle for just one of these ancient beauties. Like someone else suggested a 40g Breeder (36"Lx18"Wx16"H) is an excellent small tank for bichirs, if you are unable to get anything bigger.

Good luck with whatever you decide. :)

no this is not my first bichir. i did have one other that was a pretty good size, but i had a cousin come over an throw a pretty good size lobster in with it when i wasnt home an all i found was a skeleton of a big bichir.
