I currently have a 135 w/ about 800 gph of filtration housing 1 JD 1GT 1 Green Severum and 1 Carpinte. Along with 2 silver dollars for dithers. My question is, would a senegal bichir fit into this mix or would I have to upgrade to a larger tank first? Has anyone kept bichirs with a mix of fish similar to this? Also, I have one of those rare passive GT's. Even when she has eggs she doesn't bother anyone. The only one that shows any aggression is the Jd and that's just some chasing with some mock charges. They are all young, ranging from 3 - 4 inches. If this wouldn't work could someone suggest an oddball that would? Just wanting to add an exotic flare to the tank.

I haven't kept senegal bichirs with large cichlids, but I have one. I think that spacewise, adding a senegal would be fine. I don't know a whole lot about Carpintes, but i think Silver Dollars and probably the severums, too, won't bother your bichir. Just make sure it's not small.

I've got a bicher in with 2 JDS, a con, a sal, a mota, and BB.. the bicher does fine.. they peck at him when he gets too close but he gets his share of meals without problems.. loves sinking carnivore pellets and is pretty skilled at snatching feeders

It may work OK just keep an eye on the texas. They usually get pretty agressive when they get larger

My GT and senegal got along fine for ~6 months. Then one day the GT just snapped and wouldn't leave the bichir + other tankmates alone, so I had to take it back. :( It was the cute looking one I posted in the "Post your GT" thread too.

Thanks for all the info everyone. I saw some 5 inch senegals at the LFS for 7.99 so I think I'll go get one in the next week or so.

should be fine try feeding it at night or foods that cichlids don't like mine wont go near silversides but my bichir will stuff him self on them

Just picked up a 7 inch senegal for $12. He seems to be settling in just fine.

senegals are very cool fish. You get nice activity out of them and they dont bother cichlids. They will eat pellets and pretty much anything else you drop in. I will suggest that they get a few live catches as this is good for the fish. Most are slow at hunting but once they get it down its fun to watch them go at it. These are very personable as well. Not as colorful but they make up for it in their day to day actions in the tank. I love this fish as it is one of my favorites. Very good choice.....enjoy.
