Senegal Bichir feeding questions.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Yup that little guy is going to get big. Agree on the feeding. Whatever you have him with is going to go "away". This happened to me 30 years ago.
Me- Oh whats that cute little guy?
Them- african bichir it stays medium size like 6 or 8" at most.
Me- will it be ok with my African cichlids?
Them- oh yeah they come from the same area and cohabitate all the time.
Me- oh What do they eat?
Them- in the wild bugs in captivity flake and pellets, brine shrimp, blood worms, small krill.
Me- I'll take it!
8 months later it was 12" in my 125, and out of a huge breeding colony of cichlids there were maybe 2 left hiding in the rocks.
It wasnt my normal lfs it was one that I didnt go to often because they would cherry pick my baby cichlids and then only give me half what the other two stores did. But I was there as I had to many babies and it was getting a little tiresome raising or catching out all the babies all the time. Problem was that I tried to add higher end larger cichlids to the tank afterwards and the endli still would kill them even if it couldnt eat them.

Any sinking food will do. Don’t spend too much money on foods.

Looked at pictures of the names you guys said and yes I believe that's what it is. That story you told is basically exactly what I was told.View attachment 1357707
Fortunatly or unfortunately it will get big. You probably need a 24" wide tank for it probably within a year. Id suggest a 120 24×48 nice foot print. Itd be happy in there with a few more....lol. They are addictive, like Pringles once you pop you cant stop.

Pellets feed pellets. You can do the frozen fish if you want or krill is good too. Get a good staple pellet like spectrum and a meaty one like Hikari carnivore pellet or the masivore later on.

If they labeled that fish as a "fancy biker eel" you shouldn't listen to a single thing that LFS has to say. ;)

Agree with all of the feeding advice above, and that you should look at getting a larger tank with different tankmates or consider bringing the little dude back to the store for a different upper jaw species (like the Senegal in your title). Typical growth rate for these guys is 1"+ a month.

What size is your current tank?

So you guys know it is in a 30 gallon bow front. Today though I found him floating around upside down but still breathing. I think my cichlids have ripped his side fins off. I now have him in an iso tank but I don't think he is going to make it.... sitting upside down. 20190207_215516.jpg

Oh dang. Lower the water ASAP. So the endli can stay upright with it’s belly on the substrate.
