Have a few questions bichir people! Well I have 2, 2-3" senegal bichir in a 125 gallon tank. They have been pretty picky lately when it comes to eating so I figured I would put them in my 36 gallon bowfront to growout, and I figured it would be easier to feed them. How long should I keep them in the 36 gallon?

Is this a typical 36gal bowfront? Such as 30"L x 15"W x 21"H ?

I'm thinking that if that tank has only those two fish--and a very good filter--you could probably get away with just having two senegal in that tank for their entire lives. It is to my understanding that captive bred senegal only get around 8in long. With wild caught its a bit more rolling the dice on the chances on them getting bigger than that.

Naturally they'll have less problems in a bigger tank, of course. So, basically, my advice is to put them back into the bigger tank whenever you feel they've gotten over their food-shyness.

Might want to look into possibly getting some long-handled tweezer/tongs, that way you can just put the food right in front of their face. In my experience a senegal may not eat because they're just too slow in finding the food before other fish.

Yep, this is the standard bowfront. And I have a pair of tweezers that I use to give them their bloodworms and pellets. I've got two aquaclear 50's on the bowfront right now. Seems to be keeping the water crystal clear always without a problem.

My senegal and ornate are going to be in the 60 grow out until they're around 4-6" and then they'll both be going into a 100 for their permanent home, so I, while not as seasoned as many poly keepers on this forum, would give it until they are about 5" which shouldn't take too terribly long, maybe a couple of months.

I've never encountered a poly that refuses tilapia filet or earth worms. If you're having problems I'd highly recommend those. Of the 4 polys I've owned none have ever touched blood worms, frozen or freeze dried, but each is individual and has preferences. For smaller polys I've had good luck with frozen beef heart, it gets a bit messy when they get larger and don't want to bother with the small pieces. But, as I said none I've ever met have passed on tilapia, and you can pretty much cut it to whatever size you need.

You'll probably be able to keep them in there for a couple months, it mostly depends on their growth rate, which is very much reliant on their diet.

You can keep CB sens for a very long time in a 36 gallon tank. Maybe a year or a so if not more.

Like others have said, 36g is big enough for life.
