Can I raise a Senegal Bichir as more of a reptile for a whole before adding water to the tank?

For example, I was reading that as long as their bodies are wet they dont need water. Could I raise one like that in a 55 gallon? With an undergravel filter but with sand instead of gravel?

I believe McGill University did it fairly recently. But its different doing it in an specialized env than at home. If you take excellent care of all associated parameters and have necessary equipment, do your homework and then try attempting this. But again this wont be easy

I have to ask: "Why?"

I should be asking the same question actually

I have a lot of free time and feel it would be an amazing thing to do if done correctly. I currently have everything I need minus the sand and the filter.

I want it to be half land half water. Once I learn how to upload a picture I will post a drawing of it. Im just now sure on the sand as Ive had different answers and same with a filter.

Honestly I wouldn't. It's one thing for a university to do it and another for a hobbyist. If your doing half land half water like you said it will most likely just stay in the water portion. It's possible, but something I wouldn't do.

Thank you, I'll just stick to giving it a full tank of water. Can you direct me to whether a under gravel filter or a regular filter would be better?

I would use sand and a canister filter. Gravels isn't the best substrate for bichirs.

Definitely sand, any specific type? Also what can I pair with it and should I get an air pump? I was hoping to just have 2 fish live in there, but I don't want any fighting or anything obviously.

Pool filter sand, or medium grit sand from Home Depot, AC110 for filtration , you could do 2 Sens but honestly a wider aquarium would be excellent for them. Welcome to MFK:) Also do weekly wc's.
