Guys, I am confused by the info I have on the Senegal Bichir. Most of my books say that they get 12" big. I have one book that says that they only get 8" big. Most books say that they only eat live fish. I was talking to a guy in a pet store and he said that his ate pellets.

I am setting up a 29 gallon (the standard 30" long one) aquarium in my office and I am leaning towards two options:

1) planted tank with cardinal tetras and some pencil fish....this is a no brainer in terms of working, been there done that...

2) Have like 2 Senegal Bichir's in the 29 gallon. They might get too big. Also if they wont eat frozen food (shrimp, fish strips, ect) and pellets then they are out. Sorry cant be trucking in goldfish to the office. Wont fly.....

3) other suggestions from you guys.....my mind isn't closed to anything. I just dont want to have to do WC's like twice a week or feed live foods....

Another thing that I am concerned about is that the Bichirs usually are on the bottom. The tank could be a little boring.....

I am posting here because you guys are the experts.....let me know your opinion

They'll eat anything in my experience. My bichirs get frozen and freeze dried foods and take pellets just fine. If I were you, I'd give them a little bit bigger of a tank after a while though.

Senegals will pretty much eat anything, I know mine use to eat alot of live but now they are just preety much strickly krill, brine shrimp and pellets. The only thing is if this tank is in an office, you preety much want movement which they will not give you the satisfactory. I would go with your first choice and you could even add some other communtiy fish in with them.

yea mines LOVES mealworms its 10" female

So you guys are thinking that a 29 gallon is too small. I dont want to buy a fish that I am not prepared for.....also I cant go any bigger for my aquarium either... Do they just sit around for most of the time???

My sen rests around the middle of the day but in the afternoon or morning he is fully active swimming up and down and around the tank.
He's in a 100 g so I think he's got plenty of room to move plus he is still quite young (6")

you should probably go planted but instead of cradinals get white cloud mountain minnows they are very attractive in a well planted tank and the other benefit is no heater is needed.Anne

My pair swim around my 75g all night when I'm in the room watching TV.

I don't think they would make a bad office fish, although my pair may be strange for how active they are. They would get to big for the 29g though eventually.

Mine eat everything, from cut up fish to market shrimp to pellets.
