Senegal Bichirs are a great fish to keep i have one myself, infact i think any sort of bichir would be a good idea there not overly agressive infact there quite a peaceful fish but don't keep them with any fish big enoughto fit in it's mouth ... lol

senegals are a great first bichir!!!
what kind of tank mates are going to be in the 90 gallon?

need to know facts (anne, feel free to add any i missed:)

- senegals max out around 12"

- make sure you have a tight fitting cover on tank. (escape artists)

- if they do jump out, put them back in the tank even if they seem like they are totally dried out. i have heard stories of them reviving after several hours out of the water.

- they will eat almost anything... dead or live meaty foods, shrimp, silver sides, smelt, beef heart, home grown guppys and minnows. good quality pellets are also recommended. a varied diet makes for happy healthy bichirs :)

- bite sized tank mates may be at risk.

- leave the water level down a couple inches as the will breach the surface for air frequentely.

- temperature can be from the mid 70s to low 80s.

- there are more facts, but this will get you started.

anymore questions are always welcome. there are lots of great bichir keepers on this site.

$6.00 at most places for Polypterus senegalus

I bought 2 4" senegal bichirs about 2 weeks ago they are roughly about 5" now and tend to hide durign the early day hours but swim around alot during night or when the suns about to go down. They are great fish. I think when my clown knife, 2x arowanas, and my oscar outgrow my 120gallon and they go into a bigger tank ill stock the 120gallon with bichirs.

yup a senegal would be a good specimen to START with,

i say this cause one bichir is always not enough .
WARNING: Bichirs can be / is ADDICTIVE, try and take a look at the different species and subspecies and you're hooked. just don't say i didn't warn you.

so just in case bring some extra cash w/ you when you visit your LFS
