senegal in 55

Chances are, not the pleco. Commons have a habit of trying to eat the clime coat off of bichirs. If you do keep them together, keep an eye on the bichir for any signs he's being rasped on.
For a 55 some medium sized gouramis would work (three spot), African butterfly fish, some of the more peaceful cichlids in the 4-5" range.

go for it, I disagree with the danger from the pleco, I have had the same combination for a few years and had no such problems, the 55 gallon is good for life for the bichir but now at 8 inches your pleco will soon outgrow your tank. See if you can trade him at your petstore for a smaller, bristlenose pleco

thnx for the input guys. my buddy has had a sens and a pleco together for 3 yrs now and has not have problems. am gona risk it n see wht happens! is there any smaller species of catfish tht you would recommend. maybe a couple of corys? or would tht be pointless with the pleco/ steal food from the sens?

Most corys would end up as bichir food.
You could try upside down cats. Native to the same rivers as the senegal and quite humourous to watch, especially when kept in groups.

ive seen those b4! they r very funny to both watch and look @ lol. what about pictus cats? do u think there will be too much competition for food?

The problem with Plecos and Polys really depend on what Pleco and what Poly you get. Sens are pretty active so most Plecos will leave them alone. I've heard more issues with Gibbys and Common Plecos more than the fancy variety. I have a Sen with a Royal and Vampire Pleco for a year now with no issues.

Bichirs r mostly agressive to their own species when they mature but they're also carnivors, so any peaceful fish bigger then his mouth will b good in general. U have a wide variety of fish to choose from. African butterfly fish would b intresting since they keep to the top and senegals stay on bottom of the tank. and a couple of mid sized mid range dwelling fish and u'll b good
