I got them cheap about equivalent to $20 each at 9 inch from a hobbies that wanted to shift to different species, they are a bit rare now, most of what is available are the common gray and albino with red eyes.

Go to Petsmart, look for the tank with African Brown Knife fish, you'll see that they have senegals half off until May 22 in that tank. Corporate mindset is good for one thing, uniformity between stores. If you can find it in one, you can find it in the other in the same place 4 states away. I've been in Petsmarts in Washington, Oregon, Idaho and even Montana(insert sheep joke here) and they all have them, and they're always with the African Knives. Sometimes they call them Dinosaur Eels, sometimes Dinosaur Bichirs, but they're always senegals and regular price is around 6 bucks. According to a friend in Edmunton, even Canadian PetSmarts have the same set up, but the price is considerably higher.
 
Senegals rock, but they're gateway fish. First you get a senegal. Then two. Pretty soon you have a delhezi, and before you know it, you have a growing collection of lower jaw types...

Agree, people usually begin with senegals since they are cheap and available.
When they see how interesting and adorable this monster fish is, they caught the poly-fever.
You just keep wanting more and more.

I started with a budget of $5 per poly, went up to $10, then $50. Now I'm saving up $100 to get a congicus!
 
i bought a 3" sen like a year and a half ago its now around 7-8" it swims around all day not caring about anything eating everything being clumsy. i bought an ornate like 2 months after which is growing faster then the sen just sits in a tube on the bottom
