Senegalus Bichir in 88g/ good idea, bad idea?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Also, if your willing to get them small and grow them out, your local petsmart should have them around 6 bucks a piece, labeled "dinosaur eel"

Anyhow back on topic, a senegal will be fine, as long as the fish won't fit in it's mouth, and the care requirements such as temp. and ph , etc are relativly the same, then i dont see a problem. Senegals really arent agressive fish, i would be more concerned of something picking on the bichir really.
You are right. Observe the tank mate of the senegal, whether they are picking on it. I have to remove my climbing perch and scat because they consistenly bitting my senegals.

aint a 75 too small fro all those polys.
those ornates will get to 2 feet.
with the smaller polys it could work,
but your gonna have to upgrage soon with those polys and a giant goramy.
i myself never fill water to the top.
i thought you had a 10g?
than you were moving fish to a 50g?

For the record, I am not advocating the stocking level that tudiapaktam is using. While I can say that in my opinion it is better to not stock a tank that heavily, it is only my opinion. Tudiapaktam may or may not have a different opinion, and his opinion is just as good as mine.
What his tank does is show the number of polys that you can have in an aquarium. They tend to be low aggression and low bioload for their size. If I were the OP, I would go for upper jaw bichirs, maybe 3 or 4 with other appropriate tank mates (I like silver dollars, angel fish and other large and relatively non-aggressive fish). If you want to do lower-jaw bichers or ornates, I would only do 1-2 with other appropriate tank mates.

It will be ok. I have more than 20 bichirs with my other community fish in a 75 gallon tank. Take a look at the pictures below.

I shall move to your defense as well. I won't go as far as saying my tanks look like yours, but mine are a bit overstocked and I know that. They aren't quite, um, to that degree, but I totally understand where you are coming from. If you want more fish, and you take your maintenance of the tank and the fish to the next level and keep the fish healthy and the water pristine, then you have nothing to worry about. If you do your water changes twice as often, upgrade your filtration, and can manage to battle off all the diseases, illnesses and other problems that can stem from overpopulation, then I think he deserves a bit more respect than he's getting here, seeing as how he's doing a heck of a lot more work to enjoy his hobby than a lot of us. If he had just bought the tank, bought all the fish, dumped them in, and tried to care for them in a life with no chemicals for his water, a crappy Top Fin filter and only did WCs once every 6 weeks, that would be a totally different story.

As to the question at hand...

in an 88?? I think you could pull off a few lower jaw species, including Del, Weeksii, Moke, Retro, Senegal, Buette, Palmas, and Polli... or if you're planning on getting a larger tank in the future, you could buy some young lower jaws and use the tank as a grow out. You have to understand though, that an adult Endli or Congicus or Lap or Ornate will NOT be able to do well in an 88. Lower Jaws get big, but you could still use the 88 as a grow out. This is what I did. We're planning on getting a house in the near future, and I will make my dream of triplet 240Ls come to life, and my youngsters will have room to spare. Good luck in what you decide - setting up a new tank is an absolute blast and your possibilities are nearly endless!

Thank you for your defense. You have proven there is a lot of people in this forum that is polite in giving out their comments, suggestions and criticism.

I admit my tank is overcrowded but I make sure the water is in top guality. Beside the overhead filter, I also have an internal filter as a secondary filter in the same tank. I also ensure that all my bichir has enough food to eat.

I'm open to cristism that allows me to improve my tank. There's a lot of experience people in this forum but some of the comment is a bit nasty. I am learning how to improve my fish keeping hobby in this forum. Anyway your kind support is highly appreciated.:)

Sorry keeper, whilst I respect your opinion,I have to disagree. You could keep 20 children healthy in a 15' x 15' room....but would they be happy or comftable?

Just by doing regular water changes to keep the fish in a healthy state does not make it right. We as fish keepers have a responsibility to look after these creatures...they are not just playthings for us, they are living creatures!

Would you ever see this many birchirs living in such a confined space in the wild? If so then fine, it would not be a problem as all we are really trying to do is recreate the environment they live in. But you and I both know there would never be that many birchirs crawling over the top of each other in the wild.
